The Wongatha Native title claim was dismissed by Justice Lindgren of the Federal Court of Australia on 5 February 2007. Central Desert now has statutory responsibility for the resolution of native title over that portion which falls within the Central Desert Region ("East Wongatha").

There are currently no claims lodged in the area of East Wongatha but Central Desert is undertaking research with the purpose of lodging a claim or claims in the near future.

Land Access & Future Acts

In accordance with the Interim Heritage Process all new mineral titles will be subject to a condition requiring explorers to execute a Central Desert Heritage Agreement within 30 days of receipt of this agreement from Central Desert. If explorers do not execute the Central Desert Heritage Agreement within this specified timeframe they will be liable to have their titles forfeited by the Department of Industry and Resources. Central Desert will be monitoring this process closely and advising the Department of Industry and Resources as required in relation to the non-compliance of this condition.
