History

From 1 July 2007, Central Desert Native Title Services took over the native title functions from the Native Title Unit (the NTU) of Ngaanyatjarra Council (Aboriginal Corporation).

The NTU of Ngaanyatjarra Council commenced operations as a native title representative body in 1994 over an area of land primarily known as the Ngaanyatjarra Lands. On 1 July 2000, the area of the NTU’s operations increased significantly to include claims on the peripheries of the Pilbara, Kimberley, Eastern Goldfields and Nullarbor.

Following the recognition of the native title rights and interests of the People of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in 2005, the Ngaanyatjarra Council made a decision to cease acting as the native title representative body in late 2006. Work then commenced on incorporating a new body to fulfil the native title service provision role in the Central Desert region. Central Desert Native Title Services was incorporated in April 2007.

The transition from the NTU of Ngaanyatjarra Council to Central Desert has not affected day-to-day operations as Central Desert has retained almost all experienced staff members previously employed by the NTU of Ngaanyatjarra Council.
